Western Sahara: Africa's Last Colony The people of the Western Sahara have been living in refugee camps in the Algerian desert for 33 years, waiting for a political solution to what is officially Africa's last colony. During Morocco's war with the Sahrawi's Polisario guerrilla army, Morocco built a 2500km wall of sand separating the Moroccan controlled Western Sahara from the 'liberated zone' under Polisario control. Today, that wall is one of the most heavily mined borders in the world. A large-scale project to make the border area safe began in 2006, but it might never be completely mine-free. Images from this portfofolio were longlisted for the British Journal of Photography's 2009 Nikon Project Assistance Awards.
